ABOUT THE COVID-19 STUDY FOR HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS OF THOSE RECENTLY DIAGNOSED

This study is evaluating whether an investigational drug is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19 in adults living in the same home with someone already diagnosed and showing symptoms. If you have recently been exposed to COVID-19 by a household member, participation can be an option to consider not only for yourself, but as an important contribution to the global effort to move beyond COVID-19.

Who May Participate

Joining a clinical trial is an important and personal decision. Thank you for considering this study.

This study may be an option for you if you are at least 18 years old and meet all the requirements below:

  • A member of your household was diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 4 days and has at least one symptom of COVID-19.
  • You do not currently have any symptoms of COVID-19.
  • You have never tested positive for COVID-19.
  • You have not received and do not plan to receive a COVID-19 vaccine during the study period.

Note: These are not the only eligibility criteria for this clinical study. A study team member will help determine if this study is right for you based on all participation criteria.

What to Expect

This study involves comparing an investigational (study) drug against a placebo (tablet or capsule with no active ingredient). Placebos are an important part of the clinical research process by providing researchers with a point of comparison to know if a study drug is safe and effective. We learn about the effectiveness and safety of the study drug by comparing the experiences of the participants who receive the study drug to those who receive the placebo.

Your participation in the study will last about 6 weeks. Here’s how the study will work:

A computer will randomly assign you to receive the study drug, the placebo, or a combination of both. Neither you nor the study doctor will know if you are receiving the study drug, placebo, or combination.

You will take 2 oral tablets and 1 capsule twice a day for 10 days, for a total of 20 doses. The first dose may be taken at the study site. The remaining 19 doses will be taken at home every 12 hours.

Over approximately 6 weeks, you will have 6 to 9 visits with the study team, either in-person or by telemedicine (over the telephone or computer). You will be asked to track any changes in your health in an electronic diary (e-diary). You will also be asked to self-collect nasal swabs daily at home for the first 2 weeks.
